Canva 101: A One-on-One Canva Class for Small Business Owners
You know Canva can make your social posts, flyers, and business cards look good. You’ve just never had someone sit next to you and show you how. That’s what Canva 101 is.
Canva 101 is a private, 90-minute Canva class for small business owners who are starting from scratch (or close to it). It’s one-on-one, so we go at your pace and work on your actual designs. Take it in person at our studio in downtown Batavia, IL, or live on Zoom from anywhere. Either way, you’ll leave with a design you made yourself and the confidence to make the next one without us.

Who this Canva class is for
This is a beginner class, and we mean it. If you have a Canva account and you’ve poked around but mostly felt lost, you’re in the right place. If you’ve never opened Canva at all, that’s fine too. And because it’s one-on-one, we can skip what you already know and spend the time where you need it.
Most of the people who book Canva 101 are small business owners in the Fox Valley: Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Aurora, and the towns around them. The Zoom option means you don’t have to be local.
What you’ll learn in 90 minutes
We don’t lecture. You’ll have Canva open the whole time and build as we go.
• A full walkthrough of Canva: starting a design, finding templates, saving, and downloading in the right format for print or web.
• What you can actually make for your business: Facebook covers, Instagram posts, postcards, brochures, product mockups, and more.
• The design basics that make something look professional: contrast, balance, spacing, and knowing when to leave things alone.
• Our favorite Canva shortcuts and the settings we wish someone had told us about.
By the end you’ll have at least one finished design you can post or print that day.
Take the class in person in Batavia or live on Zoom
In person. Sessions are held at Start Something Studio, 12 S Van Buren St, Batavia, IL 60510. Just you, one of us, and real coffee. Bring your laptop.
On Zoom. The same session, live. You’ll see our screen and we can see yours when you get stuck. You’ll also get a recording of your session afterward, so you can rewatch anything you want to try again. It works from anywhere with a decent connection.
Meet your instructor
Your session is taught by Lisa Koivu or Jamie Saam, the co-founders of Start Something Studio. Between us we’ve built social graphics, print pieces, and websites in Canva for small businesses all over the Fox Valley, and we teach it the way we wish someone had taught us: hands on, no jargon, and focused on what you’ll actually use.

A laptop (tablets and phones make it hard to follow along) and a Canva account. The free plan works for the class, but we recommend Canva Pro because the features we spend the most time on, like brand kits and the background remover, live there.
No design experience needed. This is a beginning Canva class.

Frequently asked questions
Is Canva free? Yes. Canva has a free plan and a paid Canva Pro plan. You can take this class on the free plan, though we recommend Pro if you’ll use Canva for your business regularly.
Do I need Canva Pro for this class? No, but it helps. A few things we cover, like brand kits and the background remover, are Pro features. Canva offers a free trial of Pro if you want to try it during your session.
How long does it take to learn Canva? You’ll be comfortable with the basics by the end of our 90 minutes. Getting fast takes practice, and that’s what the tips and shortcuts are for.
Is this a group class or private? Private. Every Canva 101 session is one-on-one, so we work on your business, your brand, and your questions.
Can you train my whole team? Yes. If you’d like a session for a few people, contact us and we’ll set it up.
Is there a Canva class near Geneva, St. Charles, or Aurora? Our Batavia studio is a short drive from all three, and the Zoom option works from anywhere.
