Jamie and I have been small business owners for a long time now. Jamie is the more social of us – you’ll regularly see her popping up all over town, attending networking events, ribbon cuttings, and other local events. I, however, am a homebody, and sometimes I despise the idea of networking. (Forced socializing?! Yuck.) Yet, even before Start Something Studio was launched, most of my business was built through networking. So, while it’s pretty much my least favorite thing ever, it’s also one of the best things I do for my business. If you feel like me, here are some reasons small business owners should attend small business networking events (even when it’s the last thing you’d like to do).
Build Genuine Relationships
Online connections are valuable, but nothing beats the trust and rapport built through face-to-face meetings. Local networking events allow you to meet other business owners, potential clients, and industry professionals in a small intimate setting. These in-person interactions help to establish genuine relationships that can lead to long-term business partnerships and collaborations.
Increase Visibility
Attending local events consistently keeps your business on the radar. Being present at these gatherings ensures that your brand stays fresh in the minds of your community and potential clients. The more people see and recognize you, the more likely they will remember and recommend your business when opportunities arise.
Referrals
When you build relationships with other local business owners, they are more likely to refer clients to you. Similarly, you can return the favor, creating a mutually beneficial network of referrals that can drive business growth. The best place to meet fellow business owners and build relationships with them? Networking opportunities, of course.
Find New Opportunities
Local networking events are a hotspot for discovering new opportunities. Whether it’s a potential partnership, a client looking for your services, or a new market trend, being present at these events puts you in the right place to seize opportunities as they arise. These events often attract like-minded individuals looking to expand their business horizons, making it easier to find valuable connections.
Strengthen Community Ties
Small businesses thrive on community support. Attending local networking events will help you become an integral part of your community.
Enhance Communication Skills
What better opportunity to practice your elevator pitch than walking around a room, meeting new people, and repeatedly describing your business? The more you practice your elevator pitch, the better you’ll get! Effective communication is key to business success, and networking events provide a perfect opportunity to hone this skill.
Attending small business networking events is more than just a social activity; it’s a strategic move that can significantly benefit your business. From building genuine relationships and increasing visibility to gaining referrals and finding new opportunities, the advantages are numerous. So, though it might be the last thing you ever want to do, suck it up and attend the occasional networking event.
