Small Business Mid-Year Check-In

June is the perfect time for a mid-year check-in. The energy of summer is in the air, Q2 is wrapping up, and before we blink, we’ll be sliding into the busyness of fall. For small business owners, mid-June is an ideal moment to pause, reflect, and realign your business goals so the second half of the year is just as strong—if not stronger—than the first.

In this post, we’ll walk through how to assess your progress so far, what to tweak, and how to set yourself up for success in Q3 and Q4.

Why a Mid-Year Check-In Matters

Running a small business often means you’re wearing a dozen hats, juggling client work, marketing, operations, and everything in between. When you’re in the thick of it, it’s easy to keep moving without checking the compass. A mid-year check-in gives you the space to:

  • Celebrate what’s working

  • Address what’s not

  • Reconnect with your long-term vision

  • Get intentional before the fall season hits

Step 1: Review Your Year-to-Date Progress

Start by pulling up whatever planning tools or metrics you use—your annual goals, revenue targets, marketing KPIs, or even your old-fashioned paper planner. Ask yourself:

  • What were my top goals in January?

  • Which ones have I hit or made progress on?

  • Where am I off track—and why?

If you didn’t set specific goals in January, don’t worry. Now’s a great time to do it for the next six months.

Step 2: Identify What’s Working

Every business has bright spots—what’s gone well for you so far this year?

Maybe you’ve consistently shown up on social media. Maybe your referral program is bringing in more clients. Maybe you finally launched that product you kept putting off.

List out your wins, no matter how small. Celebrate them! It’s important to recognize progress, especially when you’re the one doing everything behind the scenes.

Step 3: Take a Hard Look at What’s Not

This part can feel tough, but it’s necessary. Ask yourself:

  • What have I been avoiding or procrastinating?

  • What goals have stalled—and what’s getting in the way?

  • Are there tools, platforms, or systems that are no longer serving me?

This is also a good time to look at your calendar. Are you spending time on what actually moves the needle?

Sometimes what’s not working isn’t a strategy—it’s burnout, unrealistic expectations, or simply trying to do too much.

Now that you’ve taken stock, it’s time to set fresh, realistic goals for the rest of the year.

  • What are 2–3 key priorities I want to focus on in Q3 and Q4?

  • What does success look like for each of those goals?

  • What is one small step I can take this week to move forward?

If you work with a team or have collaborators, bring them into the conversation. A clear focus helps everyone work more effectively.

Step 5: Schedule Time to Reconnect with Your Vision

When you’re running a small business, you’re constantly in the trenches. But zooming out is essential. Block time this month to reconnect with your why. Whether it’s through journaling, a walk, or a strategy session with a coach or mentor, make space to remember the big picture.

  • Who do I most want to serve—and how can I serve them better?

  • What part of my business lights me up the most?
